Who wants wood walls for an in-ground swimming pool? More
and more people who have considered various alternatives are
choosing pools built with wood sidewalls.
There must be a reason.
Actually, there are several. Especially when the wood is
long-lasting pressure-treated wood, used by selective pool
builders and by specifiers of wood products for a wide range of
projects around the world. Home basements, boat bottoms, and
fishing wharfs have been constructed of pressure treated wood for
years.
The
Features of Wood
Wood has natural qualities which are well-suited to pool
sidewalls -- it is easily handled and easily worked, it can be
modified on-site, and it offers resilience to help prevent damage
caused by ground freezing and thawing. Because of its excellent
workability and reduced dependence on ideal weather, a pool with
wood sidewalls can generally be installed in less time than other
types.
Added
Advantages of Pressure Treated Wood.
When properly pressure-treated, wood also has durability.
Pressure-treated plywood sidewalls are impregnated with
preservatives to resist decay and termites -- even when in direct
contact with the ground. Pressure-treated wood has been used
effectively for decades in various applications on five
continents. From industrial structures and utility poles to home
foundations and beach boardwalks. Pressure-treated wood has
clearly demonstrated its ability to withstand natural
deterioration.
Thousands of in-ground pools, built during the past three
decades, attest to the benefits of pressure-treated wood
sidewalls.
Construction Considerations

When installing an in-ground pool, good engineering and
construction practices should be followed. This includes
considering such conditions as water table, drainage, soil
stability, terrain grades and frost heave potential. Consult the
American Plywood Association for proper grade and thickness of
plywood. Wood materials should be pressure treated in accordance
with standards of the American Wood-Preserver's Association. It is
recommended that lumber panels be prefabricated using hot-dipped
galvanized bolts, nails and fasteners. Manufacturers'
recommendations should be followed for proper placement of vinyl
covers, liners, and other materials. It is suggested that
contractors experienced in such installations be hired for this
work.
Plantinum pool kits include
1. Pressure Treated Wood
Sidewalls - A Summer Fun Pool is constructed with .60 pressure
treated wood sidewalls and bracing. Pressure treated wood is
impregnated with preservatives to resist decay and termites - even
when in direct contact with the ground. Wood walls offer
resilience to help prevent damage caused by ground freezing and
thawing. Pressure treated wood has been used effectively for
decades in various applications on five continents. Pressure
treated wood has clearly demonstrated its ability to withstand
natural deterioration. Also, pressure treated wood carries a 100%
Lifetime Warranty to the original consumer purchaser (See Warranty
Certificate). Wood sidewalls act as a natural insulator which
makes the temperature of the pool water warmer than in pools
constructed of other materials.
2. Bracing System - A Summer
Fun Pools is braced with pressure treated lumber every two feet,
unlike other pools that are braced every four or eight feet. In
addition to the pressure treated wood braces, a Summer Fun Pool
utilizes an extensive re-bar and angle iron support system within
all sidewall and brace construction.
3. Coping - Summer Fun Pools
come with aluminum coping which offers a liner-lock design. This
unique design prevents the liner from pulling loose. Unlike other
plastic or PVC coping, the aluminum coping is built to last a
lifetime. In addition, the coping is concrete receptor coping,
which makes it more secure and eliminates the
"trip-edge," associated with some styles of coping.
4. Insulation Board - A Summer
Fun Pool sidewall is further insulated with Dow® board foam
insulation board which serves two purposes: it insulates the pool
which makes the pool water warmer, and it protects the liner from
the sidewalls. The insulation boards are designed to last for
decades.
5. Concrete Footer - A Summer
Fun Pool comes with materials needed to install a concrete footer,
around the entire outside perimeter of the pool. A 4"-8"
deep footer is standard. This feature is unlike many other pools
which only secure braces with small cement patches around each
brace.
6. Concrete Deck Support - PVC
pilasters are provided to be installed every four feet around the
over-dig of a Summer Fun Pool. These pilasters, filled with
concrete, (by the homeowner or the homeowners concrete contractor)
enable you to pour a concrete deck soon after the pool is
installed. These concrete deck supports are installed to reduce
the risk of cracking or damage to the deck due to ground settling.
7.
Vermiculite Bottom - A
vermiculite base provides for a smooth, permanent, and insulated
pool base. Because vermiculite is porous, it enables a rising
water table to pass through and recede without cracking, shifting,
or washing out the pool bottom. These problems are found in pools
constructed with a sand or concrete bottom.
8. Premium Liner - manufactured
from premium quality virgin vinyl, the liner is designed with
enough flexibility to fit attractively into a pool, yet strong
enough to last for years. All seams and edges are lap welded
electronically by a special process, and designs are the result of
extensive research and experience.
9. Plumbing - All fittings are
schedule 40-80 products made of durable cycolac material. All
Summer Fun Pools are equipped with fully adjustable wall fittings
that direct the filtered water flow to any area of the pool for
optimum circulation. A molded, non-corrosive automatic surface
skimmer helps to keep the water's surface free of debris. All
plumbing lines are made up of PVC pipe for durability and
longevity. (See "Pit System" for an exclusive Summer Fun
plumbing feature.) PVC pipe and fitting are provided as part of
the cost of installation, a Do-It-Yourselfer would need to
purchase the plumbing components.
10. Pit System - This unique
feature to Summer Fun Pools eliminates the hassles of winterizing
the pool and the threat of damage to underground freezing and
thawing. The Pit System incorporates all plumbing lines within an
easily accessible area. Unions are used in the Pit System, which
allows all plumbing lines to be easily drained for quick and
simple winterization. This eliminates the possibility of damage to
underground lines.
11. Ladder - A three-step pool
ladder allows ease of entry and exit from your pool. For added
safety, all step treads have a molded non-skid surface. One ladder
is included with every Summer Fun Pool.
12. Safety Float Rope - An
important and functional component which divides the shallow area
from the deep area of the pool and calls attention to that start
of the pool bottom's slope. The safety float rope is standard on
every deep end Summer Fun Pool.
13. Pool Safety Sign - This
sign urges swimmers to heed pool safety practices in order to
avoid serious personal injury. The pool safety sign is made of
weather resistant plastic material.
14. Vacuum Set - On every
Summer Fun Pool, the vacuum set consists of an aluminum telescopic
vacuum pole, a heavy duty, weighted vacuum head, an ample length,
heavy duty vacuum hose to reach all points in the pool, and a skim
vac, which is used to trap debris in the skimmer basket rather
than in the pump.
15. Test Kit - This easy-to-use
test kit tests for pH and sanitizer levels. Clear-view solid
colored standards are in stand up charts for easy comparison.
16. Solar Cover - A heavy-duty
Solar Cover is included with all Summer Fun Pools. The solar cover
will heat the pool water during the day and retain the heat during
the night. The solar cover reduces evaporation and cuts energy and
chemical consumption.
